Visiting Scholar Fellowships for Leipzig

 

Members of the University of Chicago community who wish to attend seminars and conferences or conduct research in Leipzig may apply for monthly stipends, for varying numbers of months, depending upon the purpose of the visit. The amount awarded depends on the level of experience of the visitor, as we explain below.
There are three kinds of visiting fellowships for such scholars wishing to come to Leipzig. The first are fellowships for those whose research interests are such that they have a special reason to come to Leipzig for the better part of one or two semesters of the German academic year. The second category of fellowships is designed specially for graduate students and faculty from the University of Chicago participating in the summer exchange program between the FAGI and the CCGP. The third category of fellowship is specially designed for recent UChicago PhDs.
Visiting fellowships are funded at the following levels: (1) postdoctoral researchers (completed PhD required) receive a stipend of €2650 per month; (2) doctoral students receive a stipend of €1475 per month.
The following are the six required elements of an application
  • An up-to-date CV.
  • A one-page, single-spaced personal statement outlining your philosophical interests and goals, and your reasons for wanting to pursue them at the University of Leipzig.
  • One confidential letter of recommendation from a professor of Philosophy or Germanic Studies who is in an excellent position to comment on your background and ability.
  • A recent publication or sample of your written work.
  • A specification of when and for how long you would like to come to Leipzig as a visiting scholar.
  • A specification of which events you plan on attending during your visit to Leipzig, as well as why it would be good for you to have the opportunity to do so.

Applications from University of Chicago doctoral students or recent PhDs will first be evaluated in a preliminary round by the CCGP Executive Board before being passed on to the FAGI. Chicago doctoral students or recent PhDs who wish to apply for visiting stipends to come to Leipzig should do so by submitting their application to: koschel [at] uchicago.edu
